Both the quality of product we sell & satisfaction we bring our customers take priority for our business, which really sets us apart from the competition. Understanding the community plays a big factor, and being in business for as long as we have, we have a great understanding of the outstanding community we serve in the Pacific Northwest. Basco has built a team of appliance experts to help our customers with anything they need to find the perfect product to fit their home needs. Matching that knowledgeable staff with the best appliances in the industry has brought our family-owned business to it’s fifth generation of management. Dating all the way back to 1878, our parent company founded by the Cronin Family began the long-lasting legacy. Below is a complete timeline giving you step-by-step how we got from The P.J. Cronin Company in 1878 all the way to Basco Appliances now in 2022.
As a harness & saddlery manufacturing company, The P.J. Cronin Company began its journey at 123 Front Street, Portland, OR. Patrick J. Cronin immigrated from Killarney, Ireland and founded the company.
At the start of WWI, the U.S. Government made a contract with The Cronin Company to supply the military with artillery harnesses.
Once transportation evolved from horse-drawn to automobile, A.M. Cronin, P.J’s son, began distributing automative parts. The Cronin Company moved to a two-story building at NW 10th & Flanders in 1921 to expand the business.
Continuing Expansion Executives of the organization foresaw a substantial increase in the usage of electrical equipment in the home and began Electrical Distribution, Inc., which was separate from the automotive store, to handle appliances. Grandson of P.J. Cronin, A.M. Cronin, was placed in charge of EDI.
Becoming the largest distributor of Zenith television sets, A.M. Cronin, III oversees EDI for continued growth.
The Cronin Company continues expansion today as a full-fledged appliance retailer dealing to designers, builders, developers, and more. Our Basco showroom opened right in the Pearl District of downtown Portland, Oregon.
